Today we went into central Oxford, the oldest part of town. All of the Oxford University colleges are in this area, and we saw a lot of graduation gowns and happy students!
We started at the Oxford Covered Market, where we had a savory pie as a snack.
Then we looked at Carfax Tower, built in the 1100s, originally part of a church. We were planning to climb it, but C was too young. We watched and listened to the bells instead.
Then we walked along the High Street, peeking into some of the colleges' academic quads. They were closed to visitors, so no pictures. We did explore a red phone booth. The kids asked: "Mom, what would you DO in there?"
We came to University Church of St. Mary, which is on the southern end of Radcliffe Square. The kids were excited that we could all climb the church tower, and we did! 127 steps, which were meticulously counted. We were rewarded with stunning views of Oxford and the surrounding countryside. The circular building is Radcliffe Camera, in the center of Radcliffe Square, which contains a library and reading rooms.
Then the kids were ready for some ice cream, and we headed home!
