Windsor Castle

 21 August 2023, Monday

We dropped our friends off at Heathrow, then went on to Windsor for a look at the castle.  It was a beautiful day to enjoy the view from outside.  No photography is allowed inside, so in addition to the beautiful multi-century architecture we saw on the grounds, we viewed:

  • Queen Mary's doll house - huge and elaborate, with electricity and running water!
  • State Rooms, including hundreds of museum-quality paintings and artifacts.  Especially interesting were the portraits of monarchs going all the way back to Tudor times, and shields on the ceiling in St. George's Hall.  We also saw the bullet that killed Lord Nelson at Trafalgar, which was retrieved and presented in a locket to Queen Victoria after his death in the victorious battle.
  • St. George's Chapel, viewing banners of the Knights of the Garter and the remains of Henry VIII.
  • We paid tribute to Queen Elizabeth II, who is interred near the Duke of Edinburgh and other family members in a quiet alcove in St. George's Chapel.

We've seen interesting knit scenes atop Post boxes
all over... this one depicts the recent coronation!
