Salisbury Cathedral

17 August 2018, Friday

After visiting Winchester, we drove 25 miles west to visit Salisbury.  We took a park and ride bus into town and headed right to the cathedral grounds.  The cathedral was glowing in the afternoon sun, and I enjoyed its beautiful architecture.  Its construction began in 1220, and it was completed in just 38 years - very fast for a medieval cathedral.

The cathedral has a uniquely large green surrounding it.  The kids enjoyed playing around on the grassy lawn while I took my pictures.

I wasn’t originally planning to go into the cathedral, but then I remembered that this is a location of one of the four surviving copies of the Magna Carta.  After missing it at Lincoln Castle, I decided we should view it here at Salisbury.

The cathedral was interesting inside - there were helpful guides, and live organ and choral music happening!  We walked through the cathedral, then went to the Chapter House to view the Magna Carta.

Then we walked through the Market Square, stopping for a ride on the beautiful carousal.  We ate a tasty Italian dinner at Wildwood restaurant, then made our way back to Oxford!
