The Shakespeare School and Guildhall was a fun stop, especially for the kids. The long timber-framed building was celebrating its 600th birthday - it was built in 1418. We had an interesting tour, which told us about the site's many uses. The guildhall was Stratford's social and governmental meeting place; Shakespeare's father was Balliff (mayor) in 1568-9. From the 16th century, the guildhall has also housed a school, which William Shakespeare attended from 1571-8. Touring theatre companies came to the Guildhall to audition before the town council, thus exposing William to the art of theatre from a young age.
We received a good lecture from the Tudor-era headmaster during our schoolhouse tour, and saw the rooms where Shakespeare and many others sat for long hours of learning. The kids got to dress up as Tudor schoolchildren and try out their quill and ink penmanship. It was fun and engaging, and I loved studying the timber framed architecture!
