National Gallery of Scotland

1 July 2018

After checking into our hotel, we stepped out to explore the New Town district of Edinburgh.  We could see the rear of all the structures lining the Royal Mile, but we didn't’ yet know what buildings they were!

We stopped into Scotland’s National Gallery for the last hour before closing time.  It was really interesting to see the Scottish landscape paintings, especially those of the Highlands.  You don’t see that many Scottish landscapes at say, the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

We were especially intrigued by “The Monarch of the Glen,” which was a featured artwork, and the kids were encouraged to express how the painting made them feel.  The artist, Landseer, also designed the lions at the base of Nelson’s Column in Trafalgar Square.

We also liked the giant painting of Niagara Falls, by the American artist Frederic Edwin Church.  He was prominent in landscape painting during the late 19th century, and this is the only major work of his displayed in a European gallery.
